Abstract

Exploring the relationship between higher education and the world of work is highly significant in the assessment of the structure of higher education institutions and has wide-ranging implications for the future shape of their curricula. This volume examines this relationship through the contributions of leading European scholars. It offers an international perspective on: the changing nature of employment and the labour market; the increasing diversification of higher education institutions, curricula and clients; the interconnections between changes in the labour market and changes in higher education and the policy frameworks and strategies through which governments may seek to steer these relationships. Case studies investigate specific themes, such as the experiences of graduates within the labour market; the effects of an academic culture on policy implementation and aspects of the relationship between higher education and work in different countries. The book considers the extent to which recent developments in this relationship are country-specific, or whether universal trends can be discerned.
