Academia is typically associated with objectivity, rationality and the pursuit of intellectual excellence. However, the labor that goes into academic practice – which sustains and develops academia as an organization – is inherently emotional. In Passion and Paranoia: Emotions and the Culture of Emotion in Academia, Charlotte Bloch examines the socio-emotional dimensions of life in academia in order to understand how they arise within, and are in turn sustained vis-à-vis structures in academia. This book, a revised version of the original Danish edition published in 2007, is based on empirical research conducted in Danish research-based institutions of higher learning during 1996–2002.
