Abstract

This case study describes how an imaginary company redesigned its pay for performance and performance management system. It helps students understand the purpose of a performance management system, gives insights into the challenges associated with designing a performance management system, evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of forced distribution, and considers the tension between evaluative ('judge') versus developmental ('coach') approaches to performance management.
