Abstract

This paper advances theory by explaining the sparks necessary to ignite rivalry, as opposed to non-rival competition or enmity. Building on research identifying objective antecedents to rivalry including similarity, interaction, and competitiveness – this paper explains forward transitions from competition to rivalry, and backward transitions from enmity to rivalry. The paper concludes by identifying objective and subjective factors that facilitate development of rival relationships.
