Abstract

Investment in education and cultural development over the past five decades has seen a rapid expansion in higher education throughout the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). This expansion of higher education has brought ethnic diversity, with students and staff from many countries from within and outside the GCC moving around the region to study or/and teach. However, although this ethnic diversity is now common, there remain few students or staff with declared physical or learning disabilities in GCC higher education. This workshop has two aims. The first aim is to discuss the findings of a study using a grounded methodology to interrogate published literature and large data sets on higher education and disability in the GCC. The second aim is to contribute to the debate on the economic, social and cultural need to promote the inclusion of students and staff with disabilities in GCC higher education. The results of the study presented during the workshop demonstrate: 1) the continued lack of students and staff with declared disabilities is in part due to and reflected in the lack of recognition of disability in the published studies on higher education in the GCC; 2) few data sets exist that can determine the influences of this changing demography on the population of the constituent countries of the GCC; 3) few data sets exist to examine the pressures of the GCC’s economy from the lack of education, training, social and financial support of people with disabilities in this.
