Abstract

Boris Akunin (born 20 May 1956) is a pen-name of Grigorii Chkhartishvili, who has also written as Anatolii Brusnikin and appeared in the press under the assumed female name of Anna Borisova. Georgian by origin, Akunin has been living in Moscow since 1958 and therefore sees himself as a representative of the Russian literary tradition, coloured, perhaps, by his strong interest in Japanese language and culture, which was the main subject of his university degree. For a number of years he worked as a deputy editor of the Inostrannaia literatura (Foreign Literature) journal, but left in October 2000 to pursue a career as a fiction writer.
