Abstract

Originally published in 2001, Mark Duffield‘s Global Governance and the New Wars aims to show how war has become an integral component of development discourse. The book predicted much of what followed its initial publication: the post 9/11 prosecution of liberal interventions, the infamous remarks made by then Secretary of State Colin Powell about humanitarian ‘force multipliers’, the co-option of aid into security strategies, the bombing of the UN and Red Cross after the interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the targeting of aid workers in conflict zones. Chris Harmer recommends this refreshed edition to students of development or international security, but is disappointed by the lack of new chapters and source material.
