Abstract

Take my picture, take my picture! That is how children summoned researchers to record their joy one hot afternoon in the favela of Cantagalo, Rio de Janeiro. The girls had dressed up for carnival and were keen to show themselves to the world. Look at their faces, outfits and how they embrace: this picture captures togetherness and joy, colourful, beautiful faces that are integral to the life and culture of favela communities. It unsettles negative representations of the favela as a place of crime, violence and poverty to show its resilience, social capital and capacity for play and imagination. It demonstrates the power of street life and the promise of communal celebration to challenge social hierarchies and create an alternative social space at the border between art and life. Through dressing up, celebration and demand for recognition, these children become powerful social agents and contribute decisively to reposition favela communities.
