Abstract

This photograph is a portrait of Rose, a local Palestinian woman leader. It was taken in the Community Centre of Arabeh (Israel) in October 2011. At the time, the photographer started her preliminary fieldwork on Palestinian feminists perceptions and practices of citizenship in Israel and the ways in which these challenge existing academic and political citizenship discourses. One central aspect of her research is the role of space as a facilitator and an expression of citizenship agency via an exploration of Palestinian women's activism that bargains, uses, and (re-)produces spaces. The photograph is an attempt to capture Rose's feminist confidence and how she uses and struggles with notions of space physically, personally, and politically.
