The European Free Trade Area (EFTA) was a British project for European cooperation launched in 1956. As soon as 1959, this project failed but it is neverthless of major importance as it could have dramatically changed the course of European integration had it succeeded. In particular, the European Economic Community would have been seriously undermined by the mere existence of EFTA. During the EFTA negotiations, France was isolated as it was the most reluctant country in Europe regarding this project. The purpose of this article is to show how the French diplomats and ministers managed to overcome this difficult situation. In particular, they played a multi-level game by supporting a strong Franco-German alliance and by fostering a solidarity among the Six countries of the EEC.
