Abstract

When research on news agencies was carried out in the 1970s and 1980s, they were often used as examples of the primary media resulting in cultural homogenization, westernization or Anglo-Americanization. However, if we study the earlier periods of global news transmission we can see that Anglo-American dominance is relatively new and was preceded by a long-lasting struggle between US and European agencies over the hegemony in world news.
