Im Laufe der letzten 30 Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts hat der Aufschwung der neoliberalen Hegemonie die Perspektive der Politischen Ökonomie aus der Kriminalitätsanalyse verdrängt. Dabei wurden eine pragmatisch-politikorientierte Forschung auf der einen Seite sowie kulturbasierte Ansätze auf der anderen Seite in den Vordergrund gerückt. Der vorliegende Beitrag zeichnet die Ursprünge der Kriminologie in der politischen Ökonomie nach und macht ihre anhaltend hohe Relevanz für das Verständnis von Kriminalität und Kontrolle deutlich. Er belegt zudem, dass schwerere Gewaltverbrechen und unmenschlichere Kontrollformen eher in neoliberalen politischen Ökonomien zu finden sind als in sozialdemokratisch verfassten Gesellschaften. Schlüsselwörter: politische Ökonomie, Kriminologie During the last thirty years of the 20th century the rise of neo-liberal hegemony pushed aside analysis of crime from the perspective of political economy, emphasising pragmatic policy-oriented research or culturalist interpretations. This paper traces the roots of criminology in political economy, and argues for its continuing relevance in understanding patterns of crime and control. It offers evidence that neo-liberal political economies are associated with more serious violent crime and less humane modes of control than social democracies.
