Abstract

This chapter introduces the concept of voice as central to explaining the experiences of a range of people caught up in the aftermath of a rape. Voice is differentiated into experiential, attitudinal and official expression of issues of concern. Roles considered include the victim/survivor, suspect/offender, criminal justice and third sector professionals and family members. In addition, the ideas of criminal justice journey, moral emotions and primary, secondary, and tertiary traumatic stress are delineated. The historical background to the derivation of contemporary rape myths is also provided. Reference is made to several high-profile cases which illustrate the pain experienced as a consequence of a rape.
