Abstract

Migrating can have dramatic effects on the life circumstances of individuals and their families. This chapter reviews the empirical evidence in the economics literature on the link between spatial mobility, socio-economic characteristics of places, and individual outcomes. It seeks to emphasize that mobility to less distressed, more diverse, and higher quality neighbourhoods has the potential to improve the lives of individuals and the lives of their children. On the other hand, very little evidence emerges of a crime-increasing effect of migration: when this occurs, results appear to be explained by the grim socio-economic circumstances faced by the individuals at destination. The main takeaway from this review of the existing evidence is that migration appears clearly justified on socio-economic grounds as moving to less distressed areas appears to lead to substantial improvements in the life chances of individuals to intergenerational benefits for their children.
