Abstract
Discusses the problems of using the concept of "futility" to justify denying or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment. Considers the significance of holding treatment is futile, the implications for resource allocation, futility's current characterisation by courts, and the problems this creates. Examines whether a definition focussing only on therapeutic issues could be adopted, and suggests why its use to justify denying treatment should cease.
