Abstract

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book begins by exploring the antecedent and immediate conditions explaining why different coalitional types entrench themselves in different regions. It provides an expanded discussion of the micro-foundations proposed for the study of comparative regionalism. The European Union a much legalized institution casts a large shadow as an unprecedented case but can also set up an analytical trap that turns Europe into the key empirical referent for understanding regionalism as a universal category. The book examines the connections among political liberalization, economic reform, and incipient changes in regional cooperation reflected in the Oslo agreements, both the bilateral Palestinian-Israeli and the broader Arab-Israeli Multilateral Peace Process. It also examines some hypotheses in four empirical contexts: ASEAN, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and the League of Arab States (League, henceforth).
