Abstract

How does a country join the United Nations? In this video, I explain the 3 steps to UN Membership. Welcome to Independent Thinking. A channel dedicated to international relations, independence disputes, secession and the origins of countries. UN membership is generally regarded as the 'Gold Standard' of statehood. Once a country has joined the United Nations, it is generally seen to have achieved 'universal recognition. It is therefore the goal of most territories seeking independence. However, it is not an easy process. As I show, there are in fact three key steps: application, a Security Council recommendation and a decision by the General Assembly. While the application process is relatively simple, securing a Security Council recommendation can the rather difficult for a number of reasons. As for gaining approval from the General Assembly, this is essentially a numbers game.
