Why did Catalonia's 2017 unilateral declaration of independence fail? In this video, I explore the events leading up to Catalonia's attempt to secede from Spain and explain why it was such a spectacular failure. Welcome to Independent Thinking. A channel dedicated to international relations, independence disputes, secession and the origins of countries. In early October 2017, Catalonia's leaders held a referendum on statehood. This led to a unilateral declaration of independence less than a month later. However, within days, Catalonia's effort to break away from Spain had completely collapsed. Madrid had introduced direct rule and many of the ringleaders were forced to flee. But how did Catalonia's leaders get it so very wrong? As is shown, the chain of events leading to the attempted secession could be traced back to 2010 and a series of (mis)steps that occurred in the years that followed. Ultimately, as I explain, the failure can be attributed to two specific reasons.
