Abstract
Islamism as an ideology is now almost a century old. It was built out of the need to reactivate a religious norm, understood in a fundamentalist way at a time when the majority of predominantly Islamic societies were dominated by foreign powers, and was meant to put an end to what was framed as a “crisis of civilization”. To that end, political union under the leadership of a single State was looked for in order to revise international relations. Movements referring to this agenda have thus engendered a very specific vision of world affairs and have attempted, when they were able to seize power as in the current cases resulting from the major turmoils that the Arab world has been going through over the last few years, to promote a diplomacy breaking with their traditional opponents’ conceptions. Could I mention the existence of “islamist foreign policies” or do we need to appreciate that this ideology has softened its initial positions in the field of international affairs as its representatives have had to exercise power and deal with very specific national environments? By the use of a constructivist approach, I try to highlight conceptions of the world coming from Islamist theorists, executives and activists and, at the same time, assess to what extent we may (or not) see some inflexions when it comes to practice.
