Abstract

Analyses the Millennium Cohort Study, providing evidence that streaming affects teachers' judgments and assessments. Indicates that otherwise equal children are perceived by teachers as more able if placed in the top stream, and less able if placed in the bottom stream. Argues that streaming thus contributes to attainment inequalities.
