Abstract
This paper examines the role of clientelism in contemporary Colombian politics. In so doing, it seeks to criticise the incentive-based analyses of the neo-institutionalists. The paper argues the need to move beyond notions of 'institutional engineering' to perspectives centred upon social actors and processes.
