Abstract

Within short spell, the use of algorithmic trading systems has spread across participants in financial markets. Hitherto, sociologists have mainly investigated the automation of stock exchanges, whereby algo trading becomes possible. However, changes in the organization of financial trading, caused by the use of algorithms, have hardly been researched. In this article, heuristics for the study of algo trading are developed. On the basis of first empirical data, it is argued that algo trading coincides with a fundamental reconfiguration of the practice of financial trading: While in traditional trading, traders could monopolize the core activities (formulating views, position management), algo trading is, to a much higher degree, distributed among different groups (systems developer, computer engineers, traders). These groups employ distinct codes in order to develop different professional vistas on trading algorithms. Not just the technical operation, but also the economic rationales of financial trading have changed: The selection and combination of personnel and technologies already imply consequential decisions; algo trading also implies new forms of attributing performances and responsibilities among different teams. The article concludes by arguing that a relevant future area of research is to focus on the mobility of people, teams and codes in organizational fields.
