Abstract

The EU Kids Online network examines how children use the Internet and mobile technologies. This entry presents qualitative findings about the meanings of Internet use for children, combined with pan‐European survey findings. The findings show, first, that the chance of a child's gaining benefits depends on age, gender, and socioeconomic status, on how parents support that child, and on the positive content available to him or her. Second, the chance of a child's being upset or harmed by online experiences depends on the same demographic factors, plus that child's resilience and resources to cope and the parental mediation he or she receives.
