Abstract
Can the EU be hospitable to refugees? Jasmine Gani writes that while support for refugees would in principle fall under the EU’s humanitarian remit, many member states have been slow to come forward with substantial aid. This has highlighted a structural incongruence within the EU when it comes to humanitarian issues, which has been further exacerbated by the budget constraints imposed in the aftermath of the economic crisis and by growing support for anti-immigration parties. She argues that an unavoidable connection exists between the increased intolerance toward difference within European society and a lack of hospitality toward refugees.
