Abstract

The book is well-known historian Vladislav Zubok - biography of the largest Russian literary critic, cultural studies, art critic Dmitry Sergeyevich Likhachev (1906-1999), which is considered one of the major intellectual figures of Russia of the XX century. Likhachev Works on ancient literature have long since become classics, his books were published in hundreds of thousands of copies of its television and newspaper interviews listened to by millions. Science and education Likhachev combined with an active social activities, especially in the last decades of his long life, had fallen on the watershed in the history of Russia years. He first received the title of honorary citizen of St. Petersburg for achievements in the sphere of culture and contribution to the preservation of the architectural appearance of St. Petersburg. This biography is an attempt to present the identity of Likhachev in the broader context of the history of Russian culture of the XX century, to answer questions about who was this man for the national science and society, and that can give the modern reader the experience of his life. Biography written with the involvement of a variety of sources, including inputs to the historical turnover for the first time, a richly illustrated and provided with an annotated index comprising almost one thousand names. Out of this publication is timed to the 110th anniversary of outstanding scientist.
