Abstract

Suburban Urbanities: Suburbs and the Life of the High Street, edited by Laura Vaughan, seeks to redress the lack of attention hitherto paid to the suburbs within urban studies. This well-designed interdisciplinary volume considers the suburb as a feature integral to the city, exploring its diverse history and emphasising the key role played by the high street. Calum W. White welcomes this book for showing the theoretical rewards that can be gained when understandings of ‘the urban’ are expanded to include oft-neglected suburbia.
