Abstract

This paper revisits Carlo Maria Cipolla’s “Notes on the history of the interest rate”. It finds the data to be reliable and explores their implications for our understanding of the relationship between interest rates and market yields of the Republic of Genoa’s public bonds across the transition from a forced loans system into an open primary market.
