This paper is situated at the interstices of the developer firm, the virtual world, and users whereby the relationship between user communication and product development is explored. It seeks to investigate the way Linden Lab develops its own positions in conjunction with Second Life users and their role in development processes. The paper suggests that the mechanisms - i.e. toolkits - by which innovators outside Linden Lab obtain innovation-related resources and assistance, innovation-related information and the inventions themselves are the vehicles to observe the ways in which the developer firm invites and supports users to create in-world content and to further develop the Second Life platform.
