Abstract
In many cities in India, the practice of forced evictions and the resettlement of displaced inhabitants in multiple storied tenements have been on the rise. Often the resettlement sites are tens of kilometres away from where its residents once resided. A striking impact of such resettlement schemes is on the livelihoods of its residence as they are dislocated from labour market ties that have often taken a number of years to establish. This kitchen is in one of the dwelling units on the sixth floor of a tower block. Every inch of space has been maximised. Pay attention to the storage rack on the right. A commonplace feature in many kitchens in such resettlement sites; these racks are manufactured and sold by enterprises that are often located in that part of the economy labelled the informal economy or informal enterprises.
