Bridging cultures: crossing urban frontiers in Rio de Janeiro.

Abstract
As researchers crossed the bridge linking the favela of Vigário Geral to the road leading to the city centre, the large closed fist at the top of the multi-colour building signalled winds of change blowing from the favela. It was our first glance at the Cultural Centre Wally Salomão, a state-of-the-art cultural venue built by favela organisation AfroReggae. Layering the bridge, the houses of the favela, the Cultural Centre and the city in the background, this image captures contradictory urban signifiers that defy established geographies and psychosocial expectations of what a favela is. The bridge and the Cultural Centre co-exist as both connecting and separating the favela and the city. One marks the struggle for visibility that characterises the new collective action in the favelas; the other is a reminder of divisions and challenges, not least to the process of social research that frequently crosses urban frontiers in search of knowledge.
