Abstract

This photograph is a portrait of six Palestinian local women leaders based in the Galilee, Northern Israel. It was taken during a panel discussion titled Womens Rights of Inheritance hosted by the local women leaders and the Community Centre of Arabeh on 27 October 2011. At the time, the photographer started her preliminary fieldwork on Palestinian feminists perceptions and practices of citizenship in Israel and the ways in which these challenge existing academic and political citizenship discourses. One central aspect of her research is the role of space as a facilitator and an expression of citizenship agency via an exploration of Palestinian women's activism that bargains, uses, and (re-)produces spaces. In this regard, the photograph presents an image of the interaction of women and spaces (real material spaces and the struggles and relationships needed to produce them) while playing with imaginations of Palestinian femininities and feminisms.
