Abstract
This poster has been designed to engage the viewer immediately with a balance of striking imagery and succinct text. A conventional “newspaper column” style lay-out is used to present a storyline which begins with an introduction to the broad subject of my research: Atlantic basin hurricanes. Imagery is important here to convey the significance of these meteorological phenomena and their impact on human society. This progresses into a more precise description of my current research i.e. forecasting of hurricanes, whilst aiming to rouse the viewer's curiosity with a notable example of forecasting going wrong during the hurricane season of 2012. This example also helps to explain probabilistic forecasting, a key concept of the poster. Finally, the results of my research are presented in the last section with a carefully constructed plot to communicate statistical information about the quality of hurricane forecasts for the 2012 season. “discussion points” box is displayed at the end to leave the viewer with key "take-home" concepts.
