Abstract
Craig Calhoun teaches sociology and directs the interdisciplinary program in social theory and cross-cultural studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He spent the spring of 1989 in Beijing as a visiting professor in the Center for Comparative Cultural Studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University. His previous publications include The Question of Class Struggle: Social Foundations of Popular Radicalism During the Industrial Revolutionand a number of other works in comparative historical sociology, social theory, political analysis, and the study of culture and communication. He is also the editor of Comparative Social Researchand chair of the American Sociological Association’s Committee on World Sociology.
