Abstract

This chapter explores the relationship between democracy and population health outcomes. Democracies are associated with better health outcomes due to more inclusive governance, better resource distribution, and increased accountability. However, this is not always straightforward, as weak and captured democracies may struggle to provide effective healthcare. The document also explores the mechanisms through which democratization affects health, including improved public health infrastructure, and examines the challenges of establishing causality between democratic governance and health improvements. The chapter proposes future avenues for research on the topic.
