Abstract

International migration contributes to processes of social stratification in the sending and receiving countries in multiple ways, with potentially countervailing impacts. This chapter argues that to understand the relationship between international migration and inequality, it is necessary to consider (a) the effects on both the countries of origin and the destination countries; and (b) the positive and negative impacts of immigration on the socioeconomic opportunities and outcomes of both migrant and nonmigrant populations, whether native born at the destination or stayers in the origin country. Further, to better understand these impacts, we need to pay attention both to the bottom of the economic distribution, where most of the research on immigration and stratification has focused, and the top, where international migrants also cluster. Finally, it is important to recognize that the stratification effects of migration are gendered: The overall impact of migration on inequality, at both origin and destination, depends on the gender dynamics that shape the migration strategies, economic returns to migration, and consequences for nonmigrant men and women at both origin and destination.
