Abstract
The “Sharing Economy” (SE) has brought theft, vandalism, and destructive behaviour towards SE products (SEP’s) that damage stakeholder relationships between citizens and SE companies. SE organisations may benefit from understanding the psychological factors that inform or shape decisions to mistreat SEP’s. We undertake a qualitative multiple case studies approach towards understanding the psychological factors that motivate or inform decisions to mistreat SEP’s. We focus on self-subsisting B2C rental assets unlockable through digital means. We conclude that SE companies’ shortcomings, which negatively influence the individual’s interaction with the SEP, invoke perceptions of being inconvenienced and unjustly treated. These perceptions incite emotional responses as instinctive reactions following from retributive needs. These retaliatory needs bring moral arguments used to justify their mistreatment decisions. The arguments apparently articulate, for the individual, their decision to mistreat the SEP during their anger.
