Abstract
In this essay, originally published in the author’s ‘Fragments of Modernity’ newsletter, David Beer suggests that the attention given to bookcases during the COVID-19 pandemic reveals our enduring attachments to particular surfaces, spaces and presences as part of the materiality of research, writing and teaching.
