Abstract

Why do countries hate losing territory? In this video, I explore the reasons why states are so strongly opposed to secession and will usually resist efforts by independence movements to break away. Welcome to Independent Thinking. A channel dedicated to international relations, independence disputes, secession and the origins of countries. Independence movements are a feature of modern international politics. Around the world there are numerous groups seeking to secede and establish their own sovereign states. However, while we know that countries will usually oppose secession, the precise reasons why they do so are often less understood. Importantly, not all countries oppose secession for the same reasons. As I explain, we can identify at least seven distinct explanations as to why states will oppose the efforts by a part of its territory to break away and form an independent state. Once understood, these different reasons can be applied to any secessionist dispute around the world.
