Abstract
It is established knowledge that democracy is associated with less repression. However, the effect of regime changes, i.e. democratisations, may be ambiguous. Using a theoretical model and econometric techniques, I find evidence that democratisations only lead to reductions in repression in countries with sufficiently high income.
